About the Author

Tara Mardigan, M.S., M.P.H., R.D. is a NYC-based nutritionist also known as The Plate Coach. She is the Director of Nutrition for Fruit Street Health, a telehealth software company. She is the former team nutritionist for the World Champion Boston Red Sox and is credited for helping change the culture of the Red Sox to use healthy food (not supplements) as an edge to athletic performance, injury prevention and ongoing success. She is an expert at helping athletes and clients with sustainable lifestyle changes.

Kate Weiler, MS, CHC is a sports nutritionist who works with athletes to optimize athletic performance through nutrition. She has combined her strongly holistic mentality with the reality of what actually works and what is convenient for a time-pressed, busy athlete. Kate is also the co-founder of DRINKmaple which is launching maple., pure maple water in May. She was featured on the front page of the Business section in The Boston Globe this past April.

Kate is an elite triathlete who has completed 5 full distance Ironman races, a countless number of triathlons, and more than 10 marathons. She is a multiple time qualifier and finisher of the Boston Marathon and she is qualifier and finisher of the 2013 Ironman World Championships in Kona, Hawaii.

Kate is the Boston Triathlon and Active Ethos Nutritionist. She has also created recipes for Lululemon Athletica and Fluide Bar a Jus- Juice and Smoothie bar in Mt. Tremblant, Canada. So what can I say? I am amazed!So a couple months ago, I had a friend that use dot work for the Boston Red Sox tell me about this book. I preordered it and waited,and waited, and waited..It was SO worth the wait!So I am a pretend athlete. Past my athletic prime so to say, and struggle with diet, nutrition, weight, etc. Hey, Im not 22 anymore, I can't eat what I want.So whats great about this book? Well lets start with the basis of it - great nutrition, natural ingredients, based in the experience of two great athletes - one of who turned around the nutrition program for the Boston Red Sox. Heck, if they can get Big Papi to stop eating hot dogs and lose 40 pounds and play till he's 40 - they can help me, right?So the quality of the recipes, etc is top notch. that can be expected. But what is a lay person like me, someone who barely knows the difference between a pot and a kettle do? Well, I follow the super well written directions, which make even a movie like me seem like I could open a restaurant. It is so well written fort he 'commoner', that anyone can follow it and reap the benefits.I urge everyone to buy this book, make the recipes, enjoy the writing, and write your own thank you note to Tara and Kate. You will be happy, your stomach and training will be happy, and yowl never look back!

Finally, a real nutrition book that doesn't push unaffordable and inaccessible foods in the name of "health" and "eating clean". This very simple, very doable way of looking at food and meals as nourishment, fuel, and enjoyment is what I've been looking for as a long-distance runner and OCR athlete. There are different power plates, all shown in easy-to-follow graphics, that you can mix and match throughout your day to achieve what you need to, wherever you are in your fitness and training. A must have!

The recipes all have a lot of thought behind them. Some aren’t feasible given the ingredient list, but if you have access to everything, it’d be a good book to have

I read the sample and thought it would be more vegan/vegetarian friendly as their first principle was "eat mostly plant based foods." Wish more books listed each recipe in the table of contents so I could had a better idea of the recipes. Unfortunately most of the breakfast (6 of 10), lunch and dinner recipes have eggs, dairy, meat (beef, chicken, turkey), fish and so on. Omnivores will probably get some great ideas and recipes, but vegan/vegetarians will find limited recipes in this book.

Most of the current training literature leads one to believe that the best way to recover from workouts is with off the shelf protein powders and supplements. First of all...that is an expensive way to train. Secondly, do you really know what you're consuming? This is an excellent book to think beyond this mentality and actually go to the source of great nutrition. As a vegan I will convert recipes where I can. For example, soaked Chia seeds as egg replacements.

I am very allergic to chemicals in fast food, microwavable foods, and convenience foods. I found this out one day in the emergency room to the tune of a little over 4000.00 and loss of a day's paycheck. Now I eat "clean." Books like this help me to stay out of that expensive emergency room!

Made a few recipes in a pinch; very simple and delicious. Especially the almond butter cups. They took no time at all and were a crowd pleaser. I'm also learning more about upgrades and now have high quality ingredients such as cocoa powder, high quality sea salt and turmeric root on hand. Thanks Tara and Kate for a great addition to our kitchen.

I love the cookbook. I've been trying to add more healthful snacks to the options for my family and myself and the recipes in this book are easy and, more importantly, have been a success with everyone in my house. It's nice to have healthy, homemade options available for breakfast, lunch, and snacks. We loved the Marathon Muffins and the Pistachio Cherry Bites.
