Use this HealthSmart Granite Mortar and Pestle during meal prep and you’ll soon realize that releasing the fresh flavors and oils of the spices you use in cooking makes a big difference in the taste of the food! Our mortar and pestle is constructed of heavyweight solid granite stone with a rough textured interior for efficient grinding. When visitors see a quality mortar and pestle in your kitchen, they know you’re a connoisseur that takes cooking seriously. When your mortar and pestle arrives, please take the time to season it properly. To season, place one-quarter cup of white rice in the mortar bowl and grind to powder using the pestle. Check the powder for any granite debris, and if you find any, repeat this seasoning process. Properly seasoning your mortar and pestle will remove manufacturing impurities. Once properly seasoned, clean your mortar and pestle by rinsing with hot water and cleaning with a brush. Do not use soap to clean, the granite will absorb the soapy residue and in turn transfer that to your food. Excellent idea for the newlyweds, a housewarming idea, or any serious cook on your list. I was only going to give this mortar and pestle four stars because it took - forever - to arrive. Even though it was listed as "in stock" when I ordered but ended up being back ordered over two months -- but to be fair its a nice mortar and pestle, and now that its arrived im very pleased with the item and the seller seemed very nice and gave me a courtesy discount on the price for having to wait so long. -- when the item did finally arrive it proved to be exactly as advertised, arrived undamaged and made from a nice --heavy-- granite, polished on the outside, smooth on the bottom and sits level on the counter with no rocking - opening in the vessel is 4" across and about 2" deep. The inside is natural and seems just the right texture to do its job. The pestle is also a nice heavy piece well suited to its task, the handle area is smooth but the business end is natural finish like the inside of the bowl and again well suited to its task. As others say with any stone mortar and pestle there is a very small amount of stone dust but its to be expected and not and issue far as im concerned - one just has to be sure to wash and season it correctly, I believe grinding with white rice until it comes out clean is the accepted method and the same for any stone mortar and pestle. Though it took some time to get here im very pleased and now that the seller has it back in stock order time should be less than I experienced. This should work well and look great in any chefs kitchen.

Be ready to do some work to condition this thing before use but it is well worth the effort. This is a solid piece of granite and heavy. If you have granite or stone counter tops, I suggest that you either place a folding paper towel under it or past some felt or cork to the bottom to prevent scratching the counter top and possibly incurring the wrath of your spouse.
So the reason for seasoning this this is almost like seasoning a cast iron pan. It gets the granite dust out of the mortar with the rice and then fills in the deeper pockets with the oil from the garlic paste and salt to prevent the growth of bacteria deep in the porous base of the granite. Deposits of salt left behind creates a saline base that will prevent bacterial growth.
Suggest grinding only. Striking the pestle in a chopping motion against the bottom on the mortar will start fractures in the granite which will eventually crack and the bottom to fall out or the pestle to break.
I read the negative reviews of the product and suspect this was more user error rather than poor product quality. Mortar and pestles and meant to grind and mash not an impact tool.
Would buy this as a gift for others but not willing to do the conditioning for them.

Perhaps it is just me, but I find a satisfaction from using a tool that humans have been utilizing for millennia. I decided to eat healthier, make my own meals and stop dining out (thank you pandemic). Grinding my own spices is a relaxing process and I feel even better about the food I prepare.

This is a serious piece of kit. It is granite so nothing light or flimsy about it. Instructions for preparing it for day-to-day use/cleaning/maintenance are easy enough to follow. With proper care, this will way outlast me. It has become my favorite kitchen tool.

Now if I only had some grandchildren to one day pass it down to. LOL Be awesome everyone!
